Instrument Meteorological ConditionsTraining

The IMC rating - previously known as the IR(R) rating - allows PPL holders to exercise privileges to fly under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) and in Instrument Meteorological Conditions, subject to specified restrictions and limitations.

The theoretical knowledge training covers:

  • Privileges of the Rating
  • Air Law
  • Human Physiological Factors
  • Flight Instruments & Aircraft Systems
  • Aeronautical Information Services - NOTAMS, UK AIP, AIS, AICs
  • Flight Planning - Meteorology, Altimetry, Terrain Clearance, Navigation Aids, Radar and GNSS Approach Procedures

The IMC theory exam comprises 25 multiple-choice questions with a pass mark of 75%, and is valid for 12 months for licence issue or 9 months following the IMC flight test. It requires a pilot to demonstrate the ability to complete a PLOG for a defined route using specified weather conditions and considering airspace restrictions, available navigation aids and arrival airfield procedures. Competence in the use of the CRP1 ‘whiz wheel’ or similar flight computer is essential !
